Fire resistance test for battery safety and homologation: coupled fluid-structure dynamic simulation

According to current safety regulations for Energy Storage Systems, the battery resistance against exposure to fire from outside of the vehicle due to e.g. a fuel spill from a vehicle (either the vehicle itself or a nearby vehicle) must be verified to obtain homologation. The goal of this thesis is to further develop AVL 3D numerical methods in order to predict and validate the simulation of dynamic fire combustion, coupled to the solid structure of the battery.


  • Literature study on fire dynamics simulation
  • Definition of suitable validation cases, based e.g. on ECE R100 or GBT requirements
  • Modeling of a test geometry, both air and solid side
  • Definition of most suitable models for gasoline pool underventilated fire
  • 3D CHT (Conjugate Heat Transfer) simulation of battery coupled to fire analysis
  • Comparison of measured and calculated data
  • Assessment of the influence factors of the fire resistancebehavior

Remuneration: The successful completion of the thesis is remunerated with a one-time fee of EUR 2,500 before tax.

According to the Austrian Employment of Foreign Nationals Act it is unfortunately not possible to assign graduate work to third-country citizens (Non-EU citizens) and Croatian citizens who study at a university abroad.
