We invite applications for a fully funded PhD position in the field of data-assisted computational modelling of particulate multiscale and multiphysics flows in the frame of the newly founded Christian Doppler Laboratory for Data-Assisted Simulations of Complex Flows. The PhD project will be conducted at the Johannes Kepler University, Linz, Austria in close cooperation with Plansee SE, Reutte, Austria. The position comprises 6 - 8 weeks on-site visits per year at Reutte, Austria.
For this industry-orientend position we are looking for a motivated and curious PhD candidate.
Start Date: January 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter
Your tasks:
- Research in the field of computational modeling of particulate multiscale and multiphysics flows
- Development of surrogate models (e.g., recurrence CFD) for real-time simulations
- Contribution to digital process twins for industrial furnaces
- Addressing fundamental questions in data-assisted modeling to reduce energy consumption and CO₂ emissions
- Collaboration within the Christian Doppler Laboratory for Data-Assisted Simulations of Complex Flows
Your profile:
- Master's degree in Physics, Applied Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, Computational Science, or a related field
- Solid background in classical simulation techniques (e.g., CFD, CFD-DEM)
- Strong programming skills in at least one scientific computing language
- Interest in or willingness to learn deep learning or other data-driven modeling methods
- Beneficial: Experience with machine learning frameworks and physics-based simulations
- Experimental skills for validation experiments
- Willingness to conduct on-site visits and talk to responsible people from development and production
- German language skills desirable
