Join us as an AI Engineer (f/m/d)*
We are looking for a curious and pragmatic AI Engineer to build production-ready AI systems and services that power applications for students, researchers and employees.
Your tasks and responsibilities:
Design and implement production-ready AI services and AI backends using Python
Build AI Features as a Service consumed by multiple university applications
Design, implement and optimize Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) pipelines
Develop modular LLM applications including tool calling, memory and retrieval
Evaluate and integrate foundation models based on capability, latency and cost
Design scalable AI architectures using caching, queues and asynchronous processing
Develop prompt and context engineering strategies
Implement evaluation pipelines for AI quality, hallucination detection and regression testing
Explore multimodal AI including OCR, TTS, STT and image generation
Ensure GDPR compliance, PII removal and responsible AI practices
Collaborate with software engineers, data engineers, product owners and UX designers
Continuously evaluate new AI models, frameworks and tooling
Share best practices and foster knowledge exchange about AI development
Your strengths and skills:
Degree in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Software Engineering or related field
3+ years professional software engineering experience
Successfully delivered at least one LLM-based application into production application in a real company environment
Excellent Python skills for production-grade backend development
Experience with RAG, hybrid retrieval (BM25 + dense), vector databases, tool calling, memory and context engineering
Experience with Haystack, LlamaIndex and/or PydanticAI
Experience with evaluation frameworks (e.g. DeepEval) and MLOps (e.g. MLflow)
Strong software engineering skills (REST APIs, Git, Docker, CI/CD, software architecture)
Understanding of cloud/self-hosted LLM deployment, token costs, latency and scalability
Knowledge in modern LLM APIs and open-source models and Model Context Protocol
Prompt and context engineering knowledge
Ability to determine when deterministic software is preferable to AI-based approaches
Understanding of GDPR, privacy-preserving AI and PII detection/removal
Kubernetes and multimodal AI experience are advantages
English skills at a minimum level of C1
