The Multilateral Policy Officer (Nuclear) supports the Australian Government’s engagement on political issues in nuclear-related international organisations in Vienna. It assists with internal reporting; supports negotiations; undertakes representational work; and liaises with relevant organisational Secretariats and other missions on specific political, technical, budget, administrative and other priority issues for Australia and Australia’s nuclear agencies. It provides support for visits, events and advocacy as required.

About the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade
The role of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) is to advance the interests of Australia and Australians internationally. This involves strengthening Australia’s security, enhancing Australia’s prosperity, delivering an effective and high-quality overseas aid program and helping Australian travellers and Australians overseas. The department provides foreign, trade and development policy advice to the Australian Government. DFAT also works with other Australian government agencies to drive coordination of Australia’s pursuit of global, regional and bilateral interests.
Key responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:
- Support Australia's multilateral engagement in the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and Vienna based organisations, OECD Nuclear Energy Agency and Vienna-based Export Control Regimes (Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG); Waasenaar Arrangement; the Hague Code of Conduct (HCoC) and Zangger Committee), by attending and participating in relevant meetings and negotiations, and preparing briefing and statements for Australia’s Permanent Representative, Counsellor Nuclear and other diplomatic officers.
- Support ANSTO’s engagement with other stakeholders based in Europe.
- Represent Australia at official meetings, events, and receptions with other missions to advance Australian nuclear foreign and multilateral policy issues and priorities.
- Provide support for the Mission’s public diplomacy and social media advocacy as it relates to nuclear-related activities and interests.
- Coordinate visit programs, side events, meetings, and logistical support for Australian Government officials and high-level visitors, as required.
- Provide administrative and planning support to the multilateral policy team, including on nuclear policy and other relevant multilateral policy across Vienna based organisations, which may involve the management of correspondence between the Mission, relevant Australian Government agencies, the IAEA and other relevant organisations.
- Ensure that relevant Australian Government agencies are well-informed regarding events related to the IAEA and other Vienna based organisations, procedures, requests and other commitments.
Required Qualifications/Experience
- University degree in the field of international security, politics, international relations, law or a related discipline.
- Demonstrated research and analytical skills, including experience/expertise in international relations.
- Well-developed negotiation and advocacy skills, including sound judgement, and a capacity to exercise discretion and confidentiality.
- Highly developed interpersonal skills, flexibility and responsiveness.
- Knowledge of Australian Government international security policies and Australia’s programs for technical cooperation with the IAEA and other nuclear-related organisations is an advantage, as is an awareness of international organisations based in Vienna.
- Strong written and oral communication skills in English.
- High level administrative and organisational skills, including the ability to manage competing priorities independently or with limited direction, and meet deadlines.
- Highly developed interpersonal, representational and networking skills, including the ability to develop strong working relationships with a range of stakeholders.
- Competency in standard Microsoft Office applications.
Security designated position
- Australian government NV1 security clearance or ability to gain same.
- Applications can be considered only from nationals of Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom or the United States who are eligible for an Australian government security clearance. Candidates holding dual Austrian nationality with one of the above nationalities are not eligible for a security clearance for this position.

Salary
The actual salary amounts to 63,324 € gross per year (on a 36.75-hour basis). The salary is paid 14 times per year.
