The Electrical Design Engineer – BESS & HV is responsible for the electrical design and engineering of utility-scale and Commercial & Industrial (C&I) Battery Energy Storage System projects, with a particular focus on high-voltage grid connections and power system integration. The role centres on developing preliminary electrical designs and managing external engineering firms responsible for detailed design deliverables. Deep technical expertise in HV substation design, protection and control engineering, and Austrian grid code compliance is essential. The position is based in Klagenfurt, Austria, with travel across Europe required to support project delivery.
Key Responsibilities
Develop preliminary electrical design packages for BESS projects, including concept-level HV/MV single-line diagrams, substation layouts, cable routing plans, and earthing philosophies, serving as the technical basis for detailed design by external engineering partners.
Manage and technically oversee external engineering firms and subcontractors responsible for producing detailed design drawings and documentation, including HV substation layouts, cable schedules, protection coordination studies, and as-built packages.
Review and approve detailed design deliverables produced by external parties — including AutoCAD and EPLAN drawings, relay coordination studies, and equipment specifications — ensuring alignment with project requirements, applicable standards, and NGEN's design intent.
Design and specify HV grid connection infrastructure (110 kV and below), including transformer sizing, switchgear selection, busbar arrangements, and cable systems, at a preliminary design level.
Develop preliminary protection and control philosophies for BESS-connected HV networks, including distance, overcurrent, differential, and earth fault protection schemes, for handover to and detailed development by external protection engineers.
Perform or commission power system studies including load flow, short-circuit (IEC 60909), arc flash, harmonic analysis, and transient stability assessments using ETAP, DIgSILENT PowerFactory, or equivalent tools.
Ensure all designs comply with applicable grid codes and standards, including EU Network Code Requirements for Generators (NC RfG), the Austrian Grid Code (Technische und organisatorische Regeln für Betreiber und Benutzer von Netzen — TOR), APG transmission connection requirements, and IEC standards.
Prepare and review technical documentation for grid connection applications (Netzanschluss) with Austrian DSOs and the TSO (Austrian Power Grid / APG), including power system impact assessments and protection settings submissions.
Specify equipment technical requirements and review datasheets for HV transformers, switchgear, protection relays (e.g. SEL, ABB REL/REF series, Siemens SIPROTEC), and battery inverter systems (PCS).
Coordinate with procurement, EPC contractors, and commissioning engineers to ensure design intent is accurately carried through to site implementation.
Serve as the primary technical interface with Austrian DSOs (e.g. Kärnten Netz, Netz Niederösterreich, Netz Burgenland, Wien Energie Netz), APG, authorities having jurisdiction, and client technical teams on all HV and protection-related matters.
Support factory acceptance testing (FAT), site acceptance testing (SAT), and commissioning activities for HV switchgear and BESS systems.
Qualifications
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or Power Systems Engineering.
Minimum 5 years of hands-on electrical design experience, with a strong focus on HV substation or grid-connected BESS or renewable energy projects.
Demonstrated experience producing and reviewing preliminary HV design deliverables — SLDs, protection philosophies, earthing calculations, and cable sizing to IEC standards.
Proven experience managing external engineering firms and reviewing detailed design deliverables, including AutoCAD electrical drawings, EPLAN schematics, and relay coordination studies.
Working knowledge of AutoCAD (2D drafting and electrical) sufficient to produce and mark up preliminary design drawings and review external deliverables.
Proficiency in power system analysis software — DIgSILENT PowerFactory or ETAP required; PSCAD or PSS/E an advantage.
Working knowledge of the Austrian Grid Code (TOR), NC RfG Type B/C requirements, APG connection procedures, and IEC standards relevant to HV and BESS systems.
Familiarity with Austrian Netzanschluss processes and DNO/TSO interface requirements is strongly preferred.
Experience with protection relay configuration and testing (secondary injection, end-to-end testing) is highly desirable.
Fluent in German and English.
Strong analytical, documentation, and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to hold external engineering partners accountable to quality and schedule.
Demonstrated ability to think beyond conventional engineering approaches — whether in value-engineering a grid connection solution, challenging a DNO's technical requirements, or finding a pragmatic path through a complex design constraint where a standard textbook answer does not exist.
