Within the Business Development organization, the Alliance Management Team (a global acting team) is responsible for managing strategic research and pre-clinical stage alliances that support the external innovation objectives of the Innovation Unit at Boehringer Ingelheim. You will engage with internal and external stakeholders at all levels to maximize the value of strategic alliances for us and our partners, and to adequately mitigate potential risks. Based on your expertise, you guide these alliances by aligning the vision, goals and overall objectives with the alliance partner. You will oversee partnership governance, enable joint decisions and implement them smoothly and transparently. In this highly collaborative role, you will act as key contact between Boehringer Ingelheim and our external partners and play an essential role to establish and maintain a trustful relationship.

Tasks & responsibilities

  • Establish strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders to manage strategic alliances effectively, and address issues that may arise during the life cycle
  • Implement governance, including steering committee meetings, according to contractual obligations and drive decision-making processes
  • Monitor implementation and adherence to research and development plans mutually agreed with our partners
  • Facilitate operational effectiveness in assigned alliances and ensure overall compliance
  • Proactively identify and resolve conflicts; in the event of dispute, convene teams of necessary business partners, including appropriate senior management, and facilitate appropriate resolution
  • Moderate and balance interests between our partners and BI to jointly drive the alliances to success


  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in the biotech/pharmaceutical/life sciences industry, ideally with experience in BD&L, Transactions, Alliance Management, and/or R&D
  • Advanced scientific degree (Ph.D. or MD, or MSc with equivalent experience)
  • Experience in external partnerships from serving e.g., as a project leader, alliance manager and/or contract negotiator role with a track record of successfully managing cross-functional projects
  • Familiarity and understanding of patents and legal concepts in contracts as well as understanding their implications in the context of a partnership advantageous; financial acumen represents a plus
  • Demonstrated leadership, influence skills at all levels in a matrix organization, creativity, problem-solving, and the ability to manage complexity
  • Outstanding conflict solving skills and authentic communication style as well as ability to moderate between different stakeholders with different needs and interests
  • Fluency in English (spoken and written)

We offer an attractive salary package in line with your qualification, experience and individual competencies. The base pay is composed of a market oriented excess payment and the respective amount according to the Austrian collective agreement (at least EUR 80,000 gross per year/full-time).
