Internship with the possibility of writing a Bachelor Thesis: „Low Cost 3D Environment Mapping for a Mobility Aiding device"


  • In our team "Assistive & Autonomous Systems" we are developing sensors for assistance systems that recognize the environment in 3D.
  • Devices equipped with these sensors can help people with disabilities to achieve more and safer mobility.
  • Moreover, off-the-shelf sensors with on-chip processing for depth and self-localization provide attractive performance-cost ratios.


  • You will learn how to create live 3D maps of the environment in near real-time.
  • Under the guidance of our team, you will adopt existing AIT mapping concepts to the chosen sensor and computing platform.
  • You will get an insight into combining off-the-shelf depth sensors with embedded/mobile computing platforms.
  • You will support our team in building a prototypic demonstrator system.
  • You will perform test runs in pre-defined scenarios.
  • You will evaluate results in terms of spatio-temporal coherence and suitability for functions such as collision avoidance or path planning.


  • You will gain experience in R&D activities as part of a team of experienced robotic experts & computer vision scientists.
  • You will have the chance to share views with our experts about the latest technological developments.

Your qualifications as an Ingenious Partner:

  • Ongoing bachelor's studies in computer science, software engineering, information and computer engineering, mathematics, robotics or similar
  • Background knowledge and interest in computer vision and sensor fusion topics for mobile robot platforms
  • Good knowledge and programming experience in C++
  • Familiar with common robotics frameworks (ROS, ROS2)
  • Fluency in English

What you can expect:

EUR 1.100 gross per month for 38,5 hours/week based on the collective agreement. Internship duration: between 3 and 6 months. There will be additional company benefits. You will be part of our international Young AIT network. As a research institution, we are familiar with the supervision and execution of bachelor theses and we are looking forward to supporting you accordingly.
