Radar sensors form the backbone of the environment perception sensors in a modern car, whether for isolated safety assistants like automatic cruise control or in a future fully autonomous vehicle. Radar allows for measuring the distance, velocity, and the angle to the objects in view, the latter using antenna arrays in the radar frontend. Angle estimation using array processing techniques enable precise location measurements of the objects around the vehicle. Although a wealth of high resolution algorithms exists in the literature, those almost always require prohibitively large computational resources. Nevertheless, a vehicle needs to react quickly to possible hazards in its driving path, so the time budget for computations is tight. There is a gap between the high resolution algorithms in the literature and the current implementations in vehicular sensor systems. In this work, you should explore this gap and partially fill it.
