AVL is the world's largest independent company for development of powertrains (combustion engines, hybrid systems, electric drive) as well as simulation and test systems for passenger cars, trucks and marine engines.

We offer a master thesis:

Modelling & simulation of a hydro-mechanical system under dynamic ambient condition

In order to achieve future CO2 targets - in particular under real driving conditions - different powertrain technologies will have to be introduced. Beside the increasing electrification of the powertrain, it will be essential to utilize the full potential of the internal combustion engine.

In addition to further optimization of the combustion processes and the reduction of mechanical losses in the thermal- and energetic systems, the introduction of Variable Compression Systems (VCS) is probably the measure with the highest potential for fuel economy improvement.

The system at hand is based on a mechanical switched and hydraulically locked conrod with telescopic shank. Target of this work is the development and validation of a hydro-mechanical simulation model for the systems length change mechanism using multi-physics simulation tools.

  • Analysis of available simulation & testbed results
  • Definition of system boundaries for the new simulation modelof the length change mechanism
  • Model setup & calibration with measurement data

  • Mechatronics, Mechanical engineering, Mathematics, Physics or similar

  • Interest in system analysis, model development & simulation
  • Analytical, structured way of thinking
  • Language: English or German

Remuneration: The successful completion of the thesis is remunerated with a one-time fee of EUR 2,500 before tax.

According to the Austrian Employment of Foreign Nationals Act it is unfortunately not possible to assign graduate work to third-country citizens (Non-EU citizens) and Croatian citizens who study at a university abroad.
