AVL is the world's largest independent company for development of powertrains (combustion engines, hybrid systems, electric drive) as well as simulation and test systems for passenger cars, trucks and marine engines.

We offer a master thesis:

Modelling of the orthotropic nonlinear material behavior of short/long fiber reinforced polymers

The importance of fiber reinforced polymer composites is growing rapidly within automotive industry. Besides their beneficial weight specific properties, these materials exhibit a complex mechanical behavior involving direction dependent mechanical properties and various different failure modes. Within the present thesis, a material modelling approach shall be developed which is able to predict the nonlinear orthotropic mechanical behavior of injection molded fiber reinforced composites. Special focus is directed towards short/long glass fiber polyamide composites.

Task:

  • Literature research on the mechanical behavior of injection molded fiber reinforced composites.
  • Familiarization with simulation methods in Simulia/ABAQUSTM and Digimat
  • Familiarization with constitutive modelling of fibre reinforced polymers
  • Development of Finite Element simulation models of coupon specimens
  • Perform strength analyses assuming isotropic material behavior.
  • Define fiber orientations for various injection molding setups
  • Perform strength analyses taking into account local fiber orientations.
  • Comparison of both approaches with accompanying experimental measurements
  • Application of the developed modeling approach to selected automotive components

Study:

  • Mechanical engineering, Technical physics or similar

Requirements:

  • Experience with the Finite Element Method, especially with the FE Solver Abaqus is appreciated
  • Knowledge of the mechanical behavior of fiber reinforced polymers is appreciated
  • Language: English or German

Remuneration: The successful completion of the thesis is remunerated with a one-time fee of EUR 2,500 before tax.
